Summer Classes for Youth
at The Granada

This summer, youth takes over as The Granada transforms into a vibrant classroom for a group of student actors from the Conservatory.  For two weeks in July, the youngsters will be creating a 30-minute touring production that will visit day camps through the City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation.

Students ages 10 – 17 will meet weekday mornings in The Granada’s rehearsal room, where they will do theatre games, exercises, improvisations and script work. This session, “Performing Children’s Theatre”, will be taught by Director of Education, Stephanie Angelini. The program is for the young actor who values creative expression and supports the powerful idea of process over performance. Classes focus on creative development and a classic approach to theatre. Students are urged to act, not perform, inevitably coming together to support each other in this group activity, this team sport, this publicly shared journey into worthwhile material and into the self.

To inquire about these programs, contact Stephanie Angelini at 805.899.3000 or SAngelini@GranadaSB.org

Also at The Granada, music students can take advantage of a Chamber Music Ensemble Class where they will learn to achieve individuality within an ensemble.  Conservatory Founder Lana Bodnar will provide the students with a challenging repertoire and prepare two to three ensembles for performances throughout the community.

The Teen Project!

“Why should I buy expensive art when I can make my own?" -Piero Milani

The Teen Project is a free program that empowers teens with the understanding that theatre and film can be positive outlets for self-expression. Student writers, directors, videographers and actors express their points of view through original material that speaks to other teens.  The students perform their play or screen their film and answer questions in facilitated talk back sessions. Participants enjoy a safe and lively forum to discuss and share their feelings about creative and social issues, stimulating thought and encouraging conversations about topics that concern teens. This “peer-to-peer” approach works because, while teens may often disregard well-intentioned adult messages, at the end of the day, youth respond to youth.

In 2008 students created a public service announcement for the Ventura County Aids Partnership on HIV Awareness for Latino Youth.  Students also created an 11 minute film for The Granada’s Hard Hat event, part of the Opening Week Celebrations.

Working with film and theatre professionals, the students have full-time access to state of the art editing system including Final Cut Pro, a professional mini DV Panasonic camera, lights, sound and green screen.  Portions of their films are shown on youtube.com and local television stations, and the entire piece is distributed to area health classes.  Another important element of this program includes public service announcements created entirely by students focusing on Santa Barbara non profit organizations that work with teens or focus on teen issues.

This program is offered free of charge to a demographically varied population of high school students, including those from the alternative schools, creating a rich and dynamic cultural opportunity.  This teen ensemble works together to hone their acting, writing and thinking skills in a safe and challenging environment. The Granada’s goal is to allow teens to share and debate their ideas about the issues they choose.

The Granada Music & Arts Conservatory

Great ability develops and reveals itself increasingly with every new assignment.
- Baltasar Gracian

One of Santa Barbara’s most respected organizations has joined with The Granada to create The Granada Music and Arts Conservatory. Originally founded in 1989, this unique program is dedicated to fostering the full growth and creativity in the youth of our community, and to inspiring the pursuit of excellence in a safe environment.

Our Conservatory is a safe place to celebrate art and artistic tradition as an expression of humanity. Every Saturday students age 6 though 19 celebrate the tradition of art as an expression of humanity through a curriculum enriched by mentoring, retreats, workshops, master classes, lectures, guest artists and solo performances. Professionalism, teamwork and discipline are hallmarks of this experience.

The annual Young Soloists Showcase was held May 18, 2008 at The Granada. Nine Conservatory students were awarded the honor of performing with a professional orchestra. This unique opportunity has created many fine musicians over the years.

Our teachers are working professionals who provide each student with an intensive program in every subject: music, theatre, film, visual arts and creative writing. Conservatory Founder and Co-Director Lana Bodnar works with each student to create a tailored choice of classes that provide a well-rounded education in all of the arts, with plenty of time to focus on their passions and talents.

New this year, the Conservatory offers an expanded theatre and film course, with special new classes for younger conservatory members.

Conservatory faculty includes:  Perie Longo, PhD, Poet Laureate of Santa Barbara; Duff Kennedy, PhD, Music Appreciation, History and Theory; Nina Bodnar, Special Events Chamber Music; Barbara Coventry, Junior Ensemble; Sabina Funk, Visual Arts; Chryss Yost, Poetry; Jami Gina Olsen, Theatre; ClaudeLise LaFranque and Misha Bodnar, String Ensemble and solfege; and Stephanie Angelini, Theatre and Film.

Class Descriptions

Poetry / Creative Writing
Fostering a love for the written word and encouraging an ability to communicate, writers study poetry and creative writing that includes scripts for stage and screen.

Yellow Bus Series

Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.  – Twyla Tharp

The Granada’s resident performing arts companies bring area school children to concerts, plays, and other performing arts events.  In the 2008-09 Season students can see State Street Ballet perform THE JUNGLE BOOK, the Santa Barbara Symphony in THE SYMPHONY GOES GREEN, and The Granada Presents THE PEKING ACROBATS (pictured right). All performances combine the arts with the other core subjects.

Attending live performances in an historic state-of-the-art venue enriches the lives of every child.  Performances are enhanced with study guides, suggested classroom activities and, when possible, the opportunity to meet the artists. Study guides will assist teachers in identifying the California Performing Arts Content Standards mandated by the Department of Education.  These live performances introduce students to the highest levels of professional achievement in the performing arts.
