About The Granada
On April 8, 1924, a dazzling new venue opened in beautiful Santa Barbara. The Granada Theatre. Nearly eighty-four years later on March 4, 2008, the storied entertainment palace reopened after a monumental renovation, returning the crown jewel to Santa Barbara’s cultural district.

The city’s first and only “skyscraper” was designed by A. B. Rosenthal and constructed by Charles M. Urton, who had never attempted a steel high-rise before and sent away for a series of “how-to” books to assist him in completing the project. After the devastating 1925 earthquake did almost no damage to the new structure, Urton proudly hung a banner from the top of the building proclaiming “Built by Charles M. Urton, Builder.”

In addition to dozens of premieres and sneak previews of classic films such as Gone With the Wind and Guys and Dolls, The Granada stage played host to the 20th century’s greatest entertainers and world class companies, from Al Jolson, Will Rogers, Fred Astaire, Henry Fonda, and Helen Hayes, to The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, Berlin Philharmonic and American Ballet Theatre, to name just a few.

The Granada is truly where art and history converge!
