Behind the Scenes: The Ticketing Team

The stars on stage may take center stage, but it’s the entire team behind the scenes that helps the show shine.

With one of the most public-facing roles at The Granada Theatre, it’s no surprise that the entire ticketing team says interacting with guests is their favorite part of the job.

From Razz Rocher, Kim Coulon, Lei Villa, and Salvatore Mauro III in the box office, to Chax Richter, the  Ticketing Services Manager and department head, it’s clear that the role they play in creating memorable experiences for guests is what drives their passion for their work.

“I feel like I’m doing something that has tangible benefits,” said Richter. “[With] so many jobs, you just push buttons and wonder what it’s for. In today’s world, live entertainment is so valuable, and I feel like my job plays a part in keeping this culture alive.”

The Start of the Experience

A guest’s first interaction with The Granada begins when they purchase tickets for a show, whether online or by calling the box office.

Razz Rocher, the Assistant Manager of Ticketing Services, is responsible for managing the box office and ensuring that ticketing goes smoothly.

“I like putting a smile on people’s faces,” he said. “I can see the positive effect that The Granada and I have on the community.

“It really is most rewarding when you complete a ticket sale for a patron and know you helped create a day to remember,” echoed Villa.

Many patrons opt to purchase tickets online, a fast and seamless experience on the Granada website. Richter underscores the importance of buying tickets directly from the official Granada Theatre website, especially as resale and third-party ticket sites continue to grow.

“If you search for tickets, check out the websites ‘About’ section to make sure you have the right website,” they said. “Often, reseller URLs appear to be the official ticket site, and they aren’t. The tickets sold directly through The Granada’s site are almost always cheaper than resale tickets.”

The ticketing team is also available to handle any issues that might arise when purchasing online from The Granada site.

Richter leads the five-member ticketing team, responsible for everything from working with presenters to hiring and training new members.

“Everything to do with ticketing is my responsibility; I’m in charge of keeping track of all the moving pieces,” they said.

Richter has been with The Granada for over three years, but their love of the performing arts dates back to their start in choirs in second grade. Today, the Boise native sings with the Santa Barbara Gay Men’s Chorus and is on their board.

“I was lucky. The Granada was bouncing back after the pandemic right when I was looking for a job where it didn’t feel like my soul was being sucked out,” Richter said with a laugh.

Rocher, on the other hand, joined the team this year. He was drawn to The Granada because he wanted to work with a nonprofit that brought value to the community.

Favorite Shows

The ticketing team spends a lot of time making sure all box office duties are taken care of, so they don’t always get to see the shows. Rocher admits he hasn’t yet seen a full performance, but the team does get a chance to attend shows when they can.

“My favorite musical of all time is Cats. I was in the front row two nights in a row when it was here,” said Richter.

Rocher also appreciated the atmosphere of The Granada during the Brian Wilson tribute show and at the recent Psychedelic Symphony, where the crowd was decked out in their groovy 1960s and 1970s attire.

From first contact to curtain call, the ticketing team is dedicated to its role in preserving the magic of live entertainment in Santa Barbara.
